Women's Water Polo Places Second at Reno Shootout Tournament!
The Don's Women's Water Polo Team looked sharp in their pre-season tournament showing in Reno at the Silver State Shootout losing only once in a hard-fought 4-3 game against Kerns High in the tournament championship game . The Lady Don's carried a 4-0 record into the final game against Kerns having disposed of Foothill in their 10-3 semi-final win earlier on Sunday. Leigha Winters, Michelle Roses, and Jenna Lambert scored for Acalanes in the final, and senior Nicole Hughes had another awesome performance scoring 14 goals in the first four wins. Kelly Jenkins-Stark and Kristina Langer also had big games for the Don's. The team will travel to Rocklin on Friday for the 10th Annual Sierra Shootout tournament. They look to improve on the 10th-place finish last year, and seem to have the team to do just that. See the results from Reno tournament from Saturday and Sunday below.

| Hughes is driving force for Acalanes By Jennifer Starks Go ahead. Hound Acalanes High School water polo standout Nicole Hughes around "That's one of the things we're working on," Bledsoe said. "The first things teams do is key on Nicole. We're working on ways for when they do that, she can draw and we can get goals from other kids. In certain situations, she can run and in others, she can create. For teams to stop us, they have to stop the entire team, not just one player." That's a dangerous proposition, especially when you consider just "She's phenomenal," Bledsoe said. "She's everywhere for us. Attacker, hole set. She's everywhere. She's doing whatever the team needs her to do in order to make a difference. We could not do what we're doing without her." Hughes is just one of many returners from last year's team which advanced to the North Coast Section quarterfinals. Of its 14 Skuce gave up her spot in the field and is now minding the cage for "The hardest part about being a goalie is directing the defense," Bledsoe said. "She's a natural field general. (Alissa) volunteered to fill the spot, so she's losing the opportunity to do what she's been doing for three years." The Dons are also getting a nice lift from freshman Taylor Stern, whom Bledsoe refers to as "a very pleasant surprise." Stern stepped right in and earned a spot in the starting lineup. She scored three goals in the win over the Broncos. Acalanes is now turning its attention toward today's game against Miramonte. Both squads finished 3-3 in DFAL play last year, behind College Park and league champ Campolindo. According to Bledsoe, all four teams remain dangerous, which should make for a compelling league race this time around. "Miramonte, College Park, Acalanes and Campolindo all have strong teams and the ability to beat each other," Bledsoe said. "The whole league is up this year." |
