Don's Golfers Place Second at DFAL Championships, Lose By One Stroke to Campo!

The Acalanes Men's Golf team placed second at the DFAL Championships played Monday when they lost by a single stroke to Campolindo 389 to 390.  The team qualified for the NCS South golf match next week.  Michael Fajardo shot a 75, and Ryan Collins, Spencer Blodgett, and Jack Sullivan shot 78's to lead the Don's.

DFAL Men's Golf Championships Summary 5/1/06

DFAL championships:

Miramonte's road to a perfect 16-0 dual-match record in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League was paved with consistency throughout its lineup. But for those who think the league's depth stops with the Matadors, Campolindo and Acalanes had something to say Monday.

In the final group of the day at Lone Tree Golf Course in Antioch, Campolindo's No. 6 golfer, Austen Stranahan, shot an 8-over 80 that allowed the Cougars to post a five-golfer score of 389 and edge Acalanes by one stroke. Miramonte, without a score over 83, took third (396).

"It feels good to beat our rivals and do what may not have been expected of us," Stranahan said. "It was really a team effort."  All three teams advance to the NCS South qualifier.

College Park's Clayton Pickersgill posted six birdies en route to 68 that earned him medalist honors. With the low score, the junior also secured his position as the DFAL MVP, unseating two-time defending MVP Daniel Cone of Campolindo. Cone was the only other golfer under par Monday with a 2-under 70.

Miramonte still claimed the league title despite the third-place finish. The DFAL determines its team champion through a point system that combines the league dual matches and the season-ending tournament.

Pickersgill advances to the South qualifier as an individual and will be joined by Las Lomas' Lucas Dunne (76) and College Park's Scott Stephens (79). Stephens earned the final spot in a playoff.

Men's Golf NCS South Qualifier 5/8/06
The Mustangs upset De La Salle behind the junior's 4-under 68

OAKLAND - The last thing the Monte Vista High School boys golf team needed was more confidence.

But after winning the East Bay Athletic League title last week by 11 strokes, the Mustangs got an even bigger boost Monday.

Behind Jeff Hamm's 4-under 68, Monte Vista upset De La Salle by two strokes at the North Coast Section South Qualifier with a five-golfer score of 2-over 362 at Metropolitan Golf Links.

The Spartans, who shot 2 under as a team at last week's Bay Valley Athletic League tournament, were second at 4-over 364. Foothill (370) was third, followed by Amador Valley (377) and Bishop O'Dowd (378).

The top 10 teams and top 12 individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the NCS Tournament of Champions on May 15 at Redwood Empire Golf & Country Club in Fortuna.

"We started slow at the start and middle of the season," Hamm said. "And now, it is all coming together."

A junior, Hamm began the 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on the eighth hole and parred his first two holes before recording one of his six birdies on No. 10. Hamm, the Mustangs' No. 3 golfer, also birdied the fourth, sixth, seventh, 14th and 17th hole.

"I didn't start to feel it right away," said Hamm, whose only miscue was double bogey on No. 18. "I've been playing well the last couple of weeks, but my scores haven't shown it. Now it is all coming together."

Since losing an EBAL match to Foothill on April 5, the Mustangs have been on a roll, closing out league play with five straight wins by an average of 25 strokes.

The Mustangs had all six of their golfers shoot 75 or lower Monday.

De La Salle, which was led by Roberto Galletti's 70, had its six golfers shoot 78 or lower. Only the top five scores count toward the team total.

Galletti's teammate, Ryan Thomas, was also under par at 71, but after Eric DeJesus's 72 the Spartans next two scores were a 75 and a 76.

"It's been hard to beat (De La Salle) every year," Hamm said. "But now we know we can beat them. Hopefully, we can keep this momentum going."

For the second straight year, the EBAL and Diablo Foothill Athletic League sent three teams to the NCS TOC. Foothill and Amador Valley also advanced from the EBAL.

Led by Daniel Cone's 70, Campolindo (385) advanced, as well as Acalanes (386) and Miramonte (393). The BVAL sent two other teams besides De La Salle in Liberty (382) and Clayton Valley (393).

College Park's Scotty Stephens led the 21 individuals competing for 12 spots with a 71. Stephens' teammate, Clayton Pickersgill, tied with three other golfers for the next lowest score at 73.

San Ramon Valley's Mike Perchak (73), California's James Maroni (73) and Albany's Adam Barkow (75) also advanced as individuals.

Salesian's Danny Johnson (77) beat Moreau Catholic's Mike Ryle (77) and Berkeley's James Donaldson (77) on the second playoff hole for one of the final two spots. Johnson sank a par putt to secure his spot. Ryle beat Donaldson on the next hole with a par putt to claim the final spot.

"I couldn't putt all day," Johnson said. "Every bogey I had was a three-putt. Going into (the playoff) I didn't think things could get any worse."

  Men's Golf Feature Article!

The Don's Men's Golf team will compete in the NCS Tournament of Champion on Monday at Redwood Empire Golf Club in Fortuna, along with the two other Lamorinda golf teams.  Read the feature article from the CC Sun below.

Men's Golf NCS Tournament of Champion Feature Article 5/12/06
TOC has a Lamorinda look
Campo, Acalanes and Miramonte golf teams advance to Monday's tournament in Fortuna

Last week's North Coast Section South Qualifier tournament was supposed to separate the area's best high school boys golf teams from the also-rans.

And while some teams set themselves apart from the crowd, there was very little separation between the three Lamorinda schools.

Campolindo, Acalanes and Miramonte all finished in the top 10 at last Monday's qualifying event. And, as in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League Tournament, the three teams finished within five strokes of each other at Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland. With a five-golfer score of 385, the Cougars finished seventh. Acalanes came in one stroke behind to finish eighth, and Miramonte (390) took ninth.

"I was pleasantly surprised," Acalanes coach Tim Scott said. "I didn't know if we could get in the top 10, because it's hard to know a lot about these out-of-area schools. The kids played well."

By cracking the top 10, all three teams will compete in the NCS Tournament of Champion on Monday at Redwood Empire Golf Club in Fortuna.

Once the teams tee off in the 8 a.m. shotgun start, it will no longer be about making the top 10 -- it will be about chasing down front-runners Monte Vista and De La Salle and finishing in the top three. The Mustangs won the South Qualifier with a 362, and the Spartans were just two strokes behind.

"Certainly De La Salle and Monte Vista have really come on in the last few weeks," Scott said. "Foothill (third at the qualifier) is tough, too. Those three teams are maybe a notch above everybody else at the moment.

"In three of the past four seasons, the team that has won the qualifier has gone on to win the Tournament of Champions. In each occurrence, the winner was De La Salle. In fact, the Spartans have won the past four NCS championships.

The top three teams at the Tournament of Champions will advance to the California Interscholastic Federation/Northern California Golf Association NorCal Championships on May 22 at Mira Vista Golf Club in El Cerrito. The top four individuals not part of those qualifying teams will also advance.

According to Scott, who coached the Acalanes girls golf team the last time Redwood Empire hosted an NCS event, the course is a little shorter than some and tends to value smart golfers over simply long hitters.

"If I remember correctly, it's going to take some accuracy (to win there)," Scott said. "If I had to pick a team with an advantage because of their home course it would be Campolindo. Moraga Country Club isn't a long course. You have to hit it straight and know your distances. That's what (Redwood Empire GC) is going to call for."

Though they have battled some lineup changes in recent weeks, Campolindo could very well have an outside chance at a top three finish. The Cougars definitely have an advantage behind No. 1 golfer Daniel Cone. The St. Mary's-bound Cone has been under par in each of Campolindo's last two tournaments.

"We're hopeful, but we're pretty realistic," Campolindo coach Steve Robinson said. "We want to make it to NorCal, but there are some pretty good teams to beat. However, (Cone) is one of the best golfers in Northern California. I think if he plays the way he's been playing, I expect him to get there regardless."

Ryan Collins Qualifies for CIF Northern Regional Championships, Don's Finish Seventh!

Ryan Collins shot a even par 72 at the NCS Tournament of Champions on Monday to qualify for the CIF State Northern Championships next Monday and the Don's team finished seventh on the day, but not good enough to advance as a team.  The team total of 402 was a fine performance, but only the top three team advance and the Don's were 19-strokes behind.  Collins score was the tied with fourth-best on the day.  Michael Fajardo finished with a score of 77 and was in the top 30 players.  Congratulations to the entire Men's Golf program for another outstanding year and good luck to Ryan next Monday.  See the summary and results below.

Foothill on course for upset Pitcaithley's 2-under 70 sparks the Falcons to the NCS TOC title over favored De La Salle and Monte Vista

FORTUNA - Eric Pitcaithley and the rest of the Foothill High School boys golf team have officially crashed the party.

Monday's North Coast Section Tournament of Champions was supposed to be a rematch between favorites Monte Vista and De La Salle, but the Falcons had other ideas.

Behind Pitcaithley's 2-under 70, Foothill won its first NCS title since 1988 and fifth overall with a five-golfer score of 10-over 370 at Redwood Empire Golf & Country Club.

De La Salle finished nine strokes back, while Monte Vista was third at 383.

The top three teams and four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the California Interscholastic Federation Northern Regional Championships on Monday at Mira Vista Golf & Country Club in El Cerrito.

Acalanes' Ryan Collins and Amador Valley's Jonny Baxter shot 72s to claim two of the four individual spots.

"It's been awhile since we won (NCS)," said Pitcaithley, who finished his round with four birdies. "I knew if we went this far, especially beating De La Salle, that we could be the best in the state."

And Pitcaithley's round might have been lower had he not snapped his sand wedge hitting out of a trap nine holes into his round.

"I could care less about my round, just as long as the team moved on," Pitcaithley said. "I think we are really going to go far. State is just around the corner."

Coming into the TOC, Monte Vista and De La Salle had been the favorites to win. Both teams captured their league titles and took the top two spots at the NCS South Qualifier on May 8 at Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland. Monte Vista beat De La Salle for the first time in an 18-hole tournament this season by two strokes at the qualifier.

But Foothill played spoiler by having all five of its golfers card a score of 78 or lower, including four at 75 or better. The Falcons' win also snapped De La Salle's streak of four straight NCS titles.

De La Salle did field the lowest individual score with Ryan Thomas' 69, but the next four scores were a 75, 76, 78 and 81.

The Purdue-bound Thomas had eight birdies on the day, including four straight on Nos. 7-10.

"I hit the ball decent and kept it in play," said Thomas, who had bogeys on the third, sixth and 11th holes and a double bogey on 18. "I made a lot of mistakes, and I could have done a lot better."

Chris Oki carded Monte Vista's lowest score with a 74, but the Mustangs then had two 76s, a 77 and an 80.

The East Bay Athletic League bolstered its claim as one of the toughest leagues in Northern California by having three teams place in the top six. Amador Valley, behind Baxter, finished sixth at 397. Bishop O'Dowd was fourth (389) and Justin-Siena-Napa (395) was fifth.

Baxter surprised himself with his best 18-hole round of the year.

"My putting was really good," he said. "I finally started to drive the ball straight."

Acalanes' Collins shared the NCS individual title last year with Campolindo's Daniel Cone. Both Collins and Cone shot a 74 last year at Rooster Run in Santa Rosa.

Cone shot a 74 this year to miss the cut by one stroke.

Fortuna's Dustin Hurst and American-Fremont's Taylor Travis shot a 71 and 73, respectively, to take the final two individual spots.

Men's Golf DFAL Championship Summary 5/2/05
Redemption for Acalanes golfer

By Robert Jordan

CONTRA COSTA TIMES

DFAL golf
ANTIOCH - Acalanes High School golfer Patrick Sklarski was ready to dump the sport a week ago.
The senior had just returned from a week's hiatus and fired his worst round of the season in a loss to Campolindo.

At the Diablo Foothill Athletic League Tournament on Tuesday, Sklarski redeemed himself with a 1-under-par 71 to win medalist honors at Lone Tree Golf Course.

"Sklarski took a week off from golf to be a camp counselor," Acalanes coach Tim Scott said. "And after the Campolindo loss he was very dejected and wanted to quit. Now he is the medalist, but that is the game of golf. It is full of highs and lows."

Sklarski's performance, along with teammate Michael Fajardo's 72, helped Acalanes win the tournament and one of the DFAL's three North Coast Section South Qualifier berths with a five-golfer score of 380.

Miramonte and Campolindo also earned berths, finishing second and third with a 387 and 399, respectively.  The seven-stroke margin also gave the Dons the DFAL title with 88 points.
The DFAL decides its league champion and three NCS berths with a points system. For every league win, a team is awarded four points.

The tournament winner gets 36 points, followed by 28 for second and a four-point deduction for every subsequent place.  Entering the tournament, Miramonte and Campolindo had identical
records at 13-3 and were even in points with 52.  Acalanes was eight points behind but had two matches to make up with Alhambra and College Park, which was done on the front and back nine at Lone Tree.

The Dons beat Alhambra 188-216 on the back nine and College Park 192-219 on the front to pick up the eight points.

Sklarski and Fajardo -- the Dons' No. 3 and No. 4 golfers -- played a big part in the victories. The duo combined for eight birdies and just four bogeys on a windy day.

"To win feels really good," Fajardo said. "I came in thinking we didn't have a chance to win against Miramonte and Campolindo. So to win by the (seven-stroke) margin is good."

Dublin's Travis Crothers (77) and College Park's Clayton Pickersgill (77) and Scott Stephens (78) advanced to the NCS as individuals.  Stephens beat Concord's Chad Allen (78) on the second playoff hole.

Acalanes Men's Golf Team Advances to State Championships After Finishing Second at NCS!

Men's Golf NCS Championships Match Summary 5/16/05
Acalanes stands tall against the win, advances to CIF

By Robert Jordan

PETALUMA - Budget cuts forced the Acalanes High School boys golf team to pay for its own Diablo Foothill Athletic League banner after winning the title two weeks ago.

On Monday, the Dons made the North Coast Section pick up the tab by earning their second banner of the golf season. Ryan Collins shot a 2-over-par 74 and was one of three Acalanes golfers to shoot in the 70s as the Dons finished second with a five-golfer score of 399 at the NCS Tournament of Champions at Rooster Run Golf Club and Banquet Facility.

The top three teams and the top four individuals not on a qualifying squad advance to next Monday's California Interscholastic Federation Northern Regionals at Valley High Country Club in Elk Grove.  De La Salle won its fourth straight section title with a 387 and Maria Carillo-Santa Rosa finished third with a score of 402 to advance.

"Everybody hopes to advance, and I have hoped for 18 years," said Acalanes coach Tim Scott, whose team advanced to NorCal for the first time in his 18-year tenure. "I told these kids that they are the best that we have had, and they put it together today under trying conditions."

For the second week in a row, weather played a big factor with the scores. Last week at the NCS south qualifier, only one golfer finished under par because of rainy and windy conditions. At Rooster Run, constant 20 mile-per-hour winds wouldn't allow a single golfer to break par.

Collins and Campolindo's Daniel Cone tied for the day's lowest score with a 74.

"It was mostly about trying to make par on the longer holes and taking advantage of the down-wind holes," Collins said. "I started off poorly and wasn't hitting the ball well, but on the back nine I played even par."

De La Salle had four golfers shoot in the mid 70s to pace the field by 12 strokes.
Jake Yount, who earned medalist honors at the NCS south qualifier last week with a 3-under 68 at Mira Vista Golf and Country Club in El Cerrito, led the Spartans again with a 75.

In a shotgun start, Yount began on the 4th hole and started with five straight pars and an eagle, but hit a rough patch at 16. The San Diego University-bound senior had two bogeys and two double bogeys over the next four holes before finishing with a par and a birdie.

"Overall I am happy and was 2-under with six to play," Yount said. "But I didn't expect a 75."

The East Bay Athletic League did not send a team to the NorCal tournament for the first time in at least eight years. California just missed the cut finishing with a 403. Foothill had a 409 and Monte Vista finished with a 416.

The Grizzlies' Rob Atkinson qualified as one of the four individuals, tying with Marin Academy's Kaz Hoffman for the third-and- spot with a 76. Cone and Justin-Siena's Jimmy Cacho (75) took the top two spots.

"I was 4-under with six holes to go and I didn't finish too strong," said Cone, who advanced to NorCal for the first time. "I just had to keep the ball low and stay focus. You can't get down on yourself if you have a bad hole because everybody is playing in the same conditions."
