The Men's Tennis team could not have asked for a better result in their DFAL opener on Thursday when the rain halted and allowed the team to dismantle Alhambra in straight games 9-0. The Men's team is excited about the upcoming season and it showed with their first league match. On Tuesday, the team played a pre-season match against Northgate and won that one five games to four against a team that usually handles the Don's very easily.

The Acalanes Men's Tennis team completed their second shutout of their DFAL opponent when the swept Dublin High on Wednesday. The Don's swept Alhambra in their DFAL opener last week. Boys tennis Spenser and Alexx Perloff, John Karsant, Andy Durgin, Paij Premji, and Aaron Boltz won singles matches. Evan Kline & Rory Hartong-Redden, Jamie Adam & Sam Behbehani, and Jon Sheu & Spencer Streib won doubles matches.

The Don's lost to Miramonte in DFAL Tennis on Friday, but were able to take one game what must have been a rain shortened event. The final with five games to one when usually nine matches are played. The loss moved the Don's to 2-1 on the year.

The Men's Tennis team used the nice weather on Wednesday to improve to 5-1 in DFAL play with yet another convincing win, this time in straight games over Northgate. The team is off to their best start in years. See the results below.

John Karsant and Andy Durgin reached the doubles semi-finals at the DFAL Men's Tennis Championships Friday, but just could not get past the #1-seeds from Miramonte losing 6-0, 6-4. The fact that the Don's were represented in the semi-finals says something about the turnaround for the Men's team this season and congratulations should go out to the entire program as well as Karsant and Durgin. Men's Tennis DFAL Championships Summary 4/28/06

At St. Mary's College, Moraga

SINGLES

DFAL championships: The warm winds greeting the Diablo Foothill Athletic League boys tennis championships at St. Mary's College blew Miramonte's way.

After going undefeated in league matches this spring, the Matadors added an exclamation point by sweeping the singles and doubles titles.

Miramonte's Nick Ballou came in seeded No. 3 in singles, but knocked off both No. 2 seed Matt Welty and No. 1 Boris Bindman -- both Northgate players -- in straight sets to take the singles title.

Ballou beat Welty in the semifinals 6-3, 6-2 and Bindman in the title match 6-4, 6-2. Ballou felt his wins were upsets.

"Big time," he said. "No. 3 beating the top two seeds? It was an upset." Ballou broke Bindman for 3-2 in the first set and never trailed again.

"In the finals, one small thing can offset the whole match," Ballou said. "You have so much pressure, you can't lose anything."

In doubles, Miramonte's No. 1 seeds Mark Pises and Dylan Serota took care of business, stopping No. 4 seeds John Karsant and Andy Durgin of Acalanes 6-0, 6-4 in the semifinals and No. 2 Nima Wedlake and Max Peiros of Campolindo 6-1, 6-4 in the final.

If there was a wrinkle in Miramonte's day, it was when the Matadors' No. 3-seeded Alex Fleming and Arnold Koo defaulted because Koo was sick. The default allowed Wedlake and Peiros a pass in the semifinals.

The winners thought their having to play, while Wedlake and Peiros rested, actually worked in their favor.

"I think it help us having a good win (over Karsant and Durgin)," Serota said." We were warmed up," Pises said.

Ballou, Pises and Serota will head for the North Coast Section championships at the Discovery Bay Athletic Club on May 5-6.

The Men's Tennis team got a real test when they played a non-league game against 14-4 Piedmont on Monday and lost by a close four games to three score. The loss dropped Acalanes to an overall 13-5 record. See the results below.

Acalanes Men's Tennis Recognized By Coaches on All-DFAL Teams, Six Players Honored!

It was quite a year for the Don's Men's Tennis program and they were honored by the DFAL coaches when two singles players and two doubles teams were selected to the All-DFAL teams for 2006. In what has to be some kind of a record, the Don's placed Gordon Forrest on the first team and Spencer Perloff on the second team for singles players, and the team of Andy Durgin and John Karsant were selected to the first team in doubles with Scott Ho and Scott Hartong-Redden earning second team honors as a doubles team. Congratulations to these six and the entire Men's program for outstanding and thrilling year.
