Acalanes Men's Track Team Claims DFAL Title With Win at DFAL Championships!
The strong year by the Don's Men's Track team was rewarded when their combination of DFAL meets and their win at Friday's DFAL Championships earned them the league title. With a combination of winning the running events and the field events, especially in the Shot and Discus events paved the way for Acalanes to finish with 107 team points, five better that second-place Miramonte. The Women's team finished in fifth-place with 46 team points and saw Senior Mo Huber win two races in the 1600 and 3200 events. Read the summary below for more about the great day for the Don's. Congratulations to both programs and especially the Men's squad for winning the DFAL title.

Distance runners make an impact Chris Vizcaino and Nate Beach went 1-2 in the boys 3,200-meter race Friday at the Diablo Foothill Athletic League championship meet, but both were winners. Vizcaino, the Campolindo High School distance star, added to his 1,600 victory with a big negative-split final mile of the 3,200 to take first in 9 minutes, 29.31 seconds. But Beach, an Acalanes sophomore, stayed with Vizcaino until the seventh lap and scored key points for the Dons with a second-place finish in 9:36.39. The Acalanes boys team eventually won its first league title since 1999 with 107 points at Campolindo. In addition to winning the championship meet title, Acalanes also won the league championship, which is based on regular-season league meets and the DFAL league meet. The Dons received strong showings by their throwers. Acalanes' Don Kephart won the boys shot put (51 feet, 91/2 inches) to add to his league discus title (144-9) from Wednesday. The Dons took first and third in the shot put and 1-2-6 in the discus. They also finished first and fourth in the 800, with Joey Thomas winning the league title in 1 minute, 59.40 seconds. Miramonte's girls squad won the DFAL championship meet title with 106 points and also was the overall league champion. The Matadors went first and third in the 800, with Jenny Bergren winning the race in 2:22.01. Miramonte also finished first and fourth in the 300 low hurdles, as Allison Brewer (47.30) won the league championship. The Matadors' Katie Batlin took first in the shot put (35-61/2) on Wednesday. Vizcaino pushed the pace in the 1,600, leading from the first lap and finishing with a personal record of 4:19.36. He was gunning for the school record. "I missed it by half a second. I was going for that record," said the Iona-bound Vizcaino. Besides Kephart and Vizcaino, other individual event double winners for the championships included College Park's Scot VanBuskirk in the boys 400 (a personal-record 50.29) and 200 (22.73), Acalanes' Mo Huber in the girls 1,600 (5:07.67) and 3,200 (11:18.88) and Campolindo's Liz Murray in the girls 100 (12.72) and 200 (26.50). After winning the 1,600 with a big move on the third lap, Huber found out before the 3,200 that she was needed by the Dons for the final running event of the day, the 1,600 relay. In the 3,200, she unleashed a powerful kick in the last 200 meters to hold off Miramonte freshman Elaine Tanski (11:22.83), then Huber anchored for the Dons' 1,600 relay squad. |

Wait is worth it for Acalanes Vaulter- Walters wins jump-off to nab final qualifying spot for state championships BERKELEY - Ian Walters waited nearly two hours Friday to clear his first height in the boys pole vault while other competitors cleared lower heights, so another 20 minutes wasn't going to hurt. But in that 20-minute span, the Acalanes High School junior attempted more vaults (eight) than he did in that first two hours. And by the time he was finished, Walters outlasted California sophomore Justin Miller in a jump-off to finish fourth at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions at Cal's Edwards Stadium. The top four finishers in each final advanced to next weekend's California Interscholastic Federation state meet in Norwalk. "I am exhausted," said Walters after clearing 13 feet, 9 inches to move on. "That was a killer meet. That was probably the most fun I have had in vaulting." Walters earned all of that amusement. Miller and Walters were forced into a jump-off after both failed to clear 14-0 in three attempts. From there, both were given another shot at 14-0 and neither cleared it. The duo then went back and forth between 13-9 and 13-6 seven times combined before Walters cleared 13-9 and Miller didn't. "(Miller) is going to be fantastic," said Walters after the competition was over. "You watch, next year he is going to be legit." Walters isn't the only Lamorinda pole vaulter making his first trip to state. Miramonte's Gavin Lowery cleared 14-6 on his first attempt and then missed all three attempts at 15-0 to finish second in the event. James Logan's Anthony Orozco won the pole vault, clearing 15-0 on his first attempt. "I know I could have jumped a lot higher, but I am kind of at a plateau right now," Lowery said. "I don't know, it was just kind of mental today." |

| Contra Costa Sun Stars of the Week 6/2/06 |
|
Stars of the week • Kyle LaHonta, Acalanes baseball -- Last week was a tough one for the Dons, as the No. 1 seed in the NCS 3A East Bay playoffs faltered in its quarterfinal against Northgate. However, LaHonta had one of his best days at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and 5 RBI. • Mo Huber, Acalanes track and field -- With a blazing time of 4:58.21, Huber took first place in the 1,600 meters at the NCS Meet of Champions. The time was nearly seven seconds faster than her best mark this season, and it gives her the best time in the area this season for the event. |
