Softball and Baseball Teams Start DFAL Season on Tuesday 3/13!!

Both the Don's Softball and Baseball teams will get their respective DFAL seasons underway with games at home against Campolindo on Tuesday March 13th.  The Baseball team is the defending DFAL Champions and looks to compete at the top of the DFAL standings this year. The Softball team also earned a NCS berth last year and is projected to be a DFAL title candidate.  See the DFAL preview below.

DFAL Softball Preview 2007
DFAL softball preview

There are no powerhouses in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League this season. There aren't many pushovers, either.

In other words, it'll be about the same as last season when Miramonte, Las Lomas, Dublin and Campolindo high schools all had one-run losses to eventual league co-champion College Park.

College Park and fellow 2006 co-champion Concord are expected to be among the league leaders again this year. But there are a number of teams capable of upsetting them.

Acalanes
• COACHES: Rory Ward and Victor Silva, first season

• 2006 RECORD: 12-12, 10-8 DFAL

• TOP RETURNING PLAYERS: C Sara Stenson, Sr.; P Haley Ward, Sr.; SS Jennifer Silva, Jr.; P/2B Katie Gray, Jr.; LF Yvette Dickson, Jr.; OF Hannah Fraschieri, Sr.; 3B Erica Mittleman, Sr.; RF Ashley Borelli, So.

• KEY NEWCOMERS: LF Kristen Phillips, Jr.; OF Sheyenne Greer So.; 1B/P Hannah Wilbur, Fr.

• KEY LOSS: 3B Brittany Frey

• OUTLOOK: The Dons were 9-3 in the DFAL at one point last season before losing six of seven, including an NCS first-round game. They should be more consistent this year with the offensively gifted Stenson, who may be a league MVP candidate, and Ward forming one of the league's most experienced batteries. Silva and all-leaguer Fraschieri lead the defense, which may not miss a beat with Mittleman taking over the hot corner. Acalanes could contend for a DFAL title.

• Campolindo at Acalanes, softball, March 13, 4:00 p.m. --

In a DFAL opener, the  Cougars and Dons are coming off tying for fourth place last year in league play  at 10-8. Both made the section playoffs, with Campolindo reaching the  quarterfinals and Acalanes losing in the first round.

Prior to the start of the game, the Don's will honor former head coach Jean Timken whom retired after eight years coaching Acalanes Softball.  Timken was also responsible for seeking the initial funding for the Don's renovated softball facility in 2000, one of the best places to play and watch Softball in the East Bay.

Don's Softball Team Defeats Campolindo in Thrilling Fashion With Comeback!

On a beautiful day for the DFAL opener, Acalanes scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 3-1 Campolindo lead and Freshman Hannah Wilbur pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to collect her first career DFAL win.  Senior Haley Ward started for Acalanes and gave up two runs on a homer in the top of the second inning, which the Don's countered in the bottom of the inning with a long homer by Jennifer Silva.  The score remained that way until Campolindo added what looked like an insurance run off of Wilbur in the sixth.  Don's Senior Catcher Sara Stenson (2-for-3) started the Don's comeback with a single and then after a walk set things up for a dramatic at-bat by Kristen Phillips.  Phillips (2-for-3) ripped a double that brought home the tying runs and then scored the go ahead run on a sacrifice fly.  Wilbur made a nice play on a shot up the middle to record one of the final outs and finished with a strikeout to close out the win.  Prior to the start of the game, the Don's 2007 honored former Head Coach jean Timken who resigned after eight years coaching Acalanes Softball.  Click here for more pix from the game.

Acalanes Softball Team Takes Another Tight Game 3-1 Over Northgate!

The key for the Don's this season in a evenly matched DFAL league will be to win the close games.  They did that again yesterday defeating Northgate 3-1 to improve to 2-0 in DFAL play.  Softball Katie Gray was the winning pitcher with Hannah Wilbur picking up the save throwing three innings giving up only one hit while striking out four batters.  Sara Stenson went 1 for 2, with a homerun, Kristen Phillips went 1 for 2, and Ashly Borrelli went 1 for 3. Read the game summary below.

Softball Game Summary 3/15/07

Fraschieri moved to 3rd on a wild pitch. Jennifer Silva then got on with a walk. Coach Rory Ward gave the double steal sign, allowing Fraschieri to score the second run of the inning.

Acalanes Softball Team Loses Star Senior Sara Stenson With Injury, Drops Heartbreaker to Alhambra!

The Don's Softball suffer two blows in as many days.  On Monday, Senior Star Catcher Sara Stenson broke her ankle at practice and may be lost for the remainder of the season.  Stenson has played on the varsity team all four of her stellar years and was a DFAL MVP candidate this year.  More on her injury will be posted when available, and out thoughts are on Sara for a speedy recovery.  The Don's played at home Tuesday against Alhambra and came out prepared to make up for Stenson's absence.  They scored nine first inning runs, but could not hold the lead in a 14-12 slugfest that left the Don's with their first DFAL loss of the year.  Read the game summary below.

Softball Game Summary 3/20/07

Girls Softball Loses to Alhambra 14-12

The Acalanes Girls Softball team played their first game of the season without catcher, Sara Stenson.  Sara broke her ankle at Monday's practice and will most likely be out for the rest of the season. Her bat and defense will be sorely missed.

Despite Sara's absence, the Lady Dons got off to a great start by scoring nine runs in the first inning. However, they could not hold on to win the game as Alhambra kept chipping away at the lead until the Acalanes defense fell apart in the 7th inning allowing Alhambra to score five runs and take a three run lead. Acalanes came back with one in the bottom of the 7th
but it was not enough. They lost 14-12.

Alhambra had 12 hits and 3 errors while Acalanes had 13 hits and 9 errors.

Highlights for Acalanes:  Erica Mittelman was 2 for 4 with a double, a 2-run homer, 3 RBIs and 2 runs; Jennifer Silva was 2 for 4 with a double, 2 RBIs and a run; Katie Gray was 2 for 3 with a RBI, a run and a sacrifice fly; Cheyenne Greer was 2 for 3 with a RBI, a run and a sacrifice bunt; Ashley Borrelli was 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs and a walk; Kristen Phillips was 2 for 4 with 2 runs; and Haley Ward was 2-4 with 1 run. Haley Ward pitched the first 3 2/3 innings while Hannah Wilbur pitched the last 3 1/3 innings.

Senior Softball Star Sara Stenson May Be Out For Season

Softball Team Earns 4-1 Win Over Dublin, Stenson Will Not Return to Play This Year!

Well it was a "good news", "bad news" day for the Don's Softball team.  First the bad news.  It was learned the star Catcher Sara Stenson will miss the remainder of her senior year due to two breaks in her leg that required nine-pins and surgery.  Stenson was hurt during a sliding drill in practice Monday.  It is a big loss, and the Don's have juggled their line-up to make up for the missing Stenson.  The good news is the Don's first win with their new line-up in a 4-1 defeat of Dublin at home on Thursday.  Acalanes got solid pitching from Katie Gray and Hannah Wilbur and enough offense to move to 3-1 in DFAL play.  Read the game summary below.  Click here for more pix from the game.

Softball Game Summary 3/20/07

Acalanes Girls Softball beats Dublin 4-1, DFAL Record now 3-1

Jennifer Silva Connects for a Grand Slam Homer in Don's Win over Las Lomas Tuesday

Don's Softball Team Takes Advantage of Miramonte in 20-1 Rout, Big Game Against Concord Friday!

The Acalanes Softball team seems to be on a roll and they took advantage of their Lamorinda rival Miramonte on Thursday in a lopsided game 20-1.  Miramonte Senior pitcher Sara Jelinsky, a first-team all All-DFAL player last year was missing from the line-up due to illness.  The Don's wasted little time teeing off on a collection of Mats substitute pitchers to collect their fifth win in six DFAL games.  Read the game summary below for the highlights from this win.  The Don's face Concord in an important game on Friday in a game rescheduled due to the upcoming spring break.  The game will be played at Concord High at 4:00pm and it features two teams tied at 5-1, one-game out of first-place in the DFAL.  This should be a great match-up of thriving teams and a very important game in the Don's quest for a DFAL title.

Softball Game Summary 3/29/07

Softball Team Beats Miramonte 20-1

Miramonte's starting pitcher was out sick and the Lady Dons took advantage. The Dons scored three runs in the first two innings with a little help from the Miramonte defense. The Dons' bats really came alive in the 3rd inning when they got six hits. They also had eight walks and ended up scoring 12 runs. In the 5th inning, Acalanes scored another five runs off of seven hits.

Overall, the Acalanes team had 16 hits and an impressive batting average of .571 for the game.   Yvette Dickson hit a homerun and single, Erika Mittelman had a triple, and Jennifer Silva had a triple and a single. Sheyenne Greer had four singles, Kristen Phillips had two and Katy Trent, Hannah Wilbur, Katie Gray, Haley Ward, and Hannah Fraschieri each had one.

The Acalanes pitching staff did a great job. Katie Gray pitched the first two innings, giving up no runs, two hits and she had four strikeouts.  Haley Ward then relieved for two innings. She had no earned runs, one hit and three strike outs. Hannah Wilbur closed the game by pitching the last inning.  Softball Team Drops Close Game to Concord High 4-2 in Game Friday!

Concord scored four first inning runs and the Don's played well but could not get the big hit in their comeback attempt as they fell by 4-2 final on Friday.  The match-up of second-place teams was an important early season game for both teams and Concord played with the home field advantage.  Acalanes scored a second-inning run to cut into the lead and held Concord scoreless for the rest of the game.   Acalanes collected 27 hits in two lopsided wins on Tuesday and Thursday and perhaps their timing was off against the Concord pitcher who gave up only four hits on the day.  The Don's benefited from a throwing error to collect a second run in sixth but that ended the games scoring.  I'm sure that the Don's will give Concord a run for their money when to two teams play at Acalanes later in the season.  Acalanes won't play again for a couple of weeks due to Spring Breaks by the DFAL schools and will play next in an away game against College Park on 4/17.  College Park is currently undefeated and owns the leagues top pitcher.  It will be a great game for the Don's faithful.  All and All, the Don's have started their DFAL season well at 5-2 and will be a strong contender for a DFAL crown when play resumes in Mid-April.  Click here for more pictures from the softball games this week.

The Acalanes Girls softball team gave up four runs in the first inning on three hits. The team played great defense and didn't give up any runs after that.

Yvette Dickson Prepares to Cut Down Base Stealer in Concord Game

After Near Upset of College Park, Don's Softball Defeats Campolindo for Second Time This Season!

Softball Game Summary 4/17/07

College Park 3, Acalanes 2:

The Falcons' 14th straight victory proved to be a bit more adventurous than the previous 13.  Down 2-0, College Park scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a DFAL win over the visiting Dons.

Bryanna Ballard and Brooke Coloma each had a RBI and Adriane Stoia scored from third on a wild pitch as the Falcons (14-1, 9-0 DFAL) remained unbeaten since a season-opening 3-1 loss to Newark Memorial on March 9. It's College Park's longest winning streak since stringing together 17 straight victories in 2002.

It was also the Falcons' third game in under 24 hours, as they beat both Montgomery-Santa Rosa and Pinole Valley Monday night to win the Standley Cup.

The win Tuesday keeps first-place College Park two games ahead of Concord with nine to play. Acalanes fell to fourth, 31/2 games back.

The Dons (8-6, 5-3) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning as Erika Mittleman's sacrifice fly scored Jennifer Silva and Yvette Dickson scored on an infielder's error. Hannah Fraschieri popped up a bunt attempt to Audra Kepler, but Kepler's throw back to third to get Dickson skipped into foul territory.

Softball Game Summary 4/19/07

Jennifer Silva Hits a three-run Double to Win the Game for Acalanes

Acalanes gave up two runs in the first and one in the second with only one of the runs being earned. Acalanes scored one run in the 4th off of an inside-the-park homerun by Yvette Dickson. Trailing by two runs in the 7th inning, Katie Gray started the winning rally by getting on base via a single, Hannah Fraschieri walked and Ashley Borrelli bunted for a single to load the bases for Jennifer Silva. Jennifer hit a shot into centerfield, scoring all three runners, giving Acalanes a 4-3 lead.

Things were a little hairy in the bottom of the 7th when Campo's lead off batter got to second on an error. She was then moved to third with a sacrifice bunt. The next batter grounded out to pitcher Katie Gray.  Gray proceeded to strike out their last batter to end the game for Acalanes.

Overall, Acalanes had 11 hits and three errors while Campo had six hits and no errors. Yvette Dickson was 3 for 4, with 1 RBI and 1 run. Jennifer Silva was 2 for 4 with a double and 3 RBIs.   Softball Team Stays in DFAL Title Hunt with Thrilling Win Over Northgate Tuesday!

The Acalanes Softball team improved their record to 7-3 in the DFAL following their second thrilling win in as many games.  The Don's came-from-behind to defeat Campolindo last Thursday with a seventh-inning rally, and won again yesterday in come-back fashion in their 3-2 win over an improving Northgate team.  Senior Ericka Mittelman was the hero yesterday with two huge RBI's including driving in Ashly Borelli with a winning-run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.   After falling behind 2-0, the Don's scored to tie the score in the third-inning and it stayed that way until the Don's winning run in the seventh.  Acalanes has three loses this year, and can improve their chances when they play against Alhambra who defeated Acalanes the first go round early in the season.  The Don's got a great pitching performance in Tuesday's game from starter Katie Gray and in relief from Haley Ward who picked up her third win of the year.

Softball Game Summary 4/17/07

Erika Mittelman's Base Hit Breaks Tie in Bottom of the 7th to Beat Northgate 3-2

Northgate scored first with an unearned run in the second inning. They scored again in the second to lead Acalanes 2-0. Acalanes came back with a 2 runs in the 3rd with an RBI double by Jennifer Silva to score Hannah Fraschieri who got on base with a walk and an RBI single by Erika Mittelman to score Jennifer.  There was no other action until the bottom of the 7th. Ashly Borrelli got on with a single and stole second. With 2 outs, Erika Mittelman hit the ball to right field, allowing Ashly to score the winning run.

Overall, Erika Mittelman went 3 for 4, with 2 RBIs and a double. Jennifer Silva was 2 for 4 with 1 RBI, a double and a run. The pitching staff was outstanding.  Katie Gray pitched 4 innings allowing only 1 earned run and getting 6 strike outs. Haley Ward was the winning pitcher, pitching the last 3 innings giving up only 1 hit and getting 6 strike outs.

Kristen Phillips Gives Don's Softball Extra-Inning Win with RBI in 8th-Inning!

The Don's Softball team continued to control their own destiny with a come-from-behind extra-inning win over pesky Las Lomas on Tuesday.  They tied the score at 3-3 with a run in the fifth and the score remained tied until Kristen Phillips drove in the winning run with a single to drive home Jennifer Silva in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Silva had given Acalanes an early lead with a two-run homer in the first and is making some noise as a possible league MVP candidate with her strong play this year.  Another Junior, Katie Gray pitched the final four innings and earned her seventh win of the year.  Check out pictures from recent games in the new Softball Gallery here.

Diablo, and home games against Miramonte (4-9) and Concord (10-4).  They will need some help to catch College Park, but regardless, this has been a fine year for the Don's.  Read the feature article from the Contra Costa Sun below and see the game summary from the Dublin game.

Softball Feature Article From Contra Costa Sun 5/4/07
Acalanes softball is having a stellar season- With one more win, the Dons will have their best record since 2003 when they reached the NCS semifinals

With six games left on their 2007 slate, Acalanes High School softball is in the midst of compiling quite a season. How the next several games unfold will determine the milestones the Dons attain and those left unreachable.

The Dons stand at 12-6 with an 9-3 mark in Diablo Foothill Athletic League play and are within one game of first-place College Park. With a 4-3 win over Las Lomas on Tuesday, Acalanes qualified for a berth in the North Coast Section playoffs. The Dons can post their best record since 2003 if they eclipse their 2005 victory total of 14. In 2003, the Dons went 23-3, 16-2 DFAL and reached the NCS semifinals. Since then, Acalanes has languished around .500 with a 12-12 record last season.

At the helm of Acalanes softball are head coaches, Rory Ward and Victor Silva. The first-year duo took over for Jean Timken who departed the program after an eight-year stint at the school.

"We have basically the same team as last year," Ward said. "The players have just shown better maturity and improvement."

Acalanes' forte is pitching and defense, which is the foundation of any successful club. A trio of hurlers in Katie Gray, Haley Ward and Hannah Wilbur keep the Dons close, while their offense scores enough to edge opponents.

"Katie has been the ace of the staff," Silva said. "All three have offered great contributions."
At 7-0, Gray plays the role of a dominant starter, while Wilbur has assumed the closer position. All three are likely to appear in any given game to confuse opponents with their varied looks.

The Dons weathered a possible season crushing blow in the loss of standout catcher Sara Stenson. A potential league MVP candidate, Stenson suffered a broken ankle during practice on March 19. Yvette Dickson has stepped into the void admirably to provide Acalanes with a steady presence behind the dish.

Stenson may return for NCS action, but not at catcher as the senior will slide over to first base if she does recuperate in time.

"We didn't know what to expect," Silva said regarding the loss of Stenson.  "But, Yvette has been great. Her catching has been one of our keys."

Against Las Lomas, Acalanes won in extra innings as Kristen Phillips had the game winning hit. Gray notched another victory, while Phillips went 2-for-4. Shortstop Jennifer Silva, a solid defender and slugger for Acalanes, cracked a home run and tallied two RBI's.

"We're in good shape," Silva said. "We have second place to ourselves, but we still need some help to catch College Park."

Lady Don's Softball Team Defeats Mt. Diablo 10-0 in Five Inning Game!

The Don's improved their record to 11-3 in league play with a convincing win over Mt. Diablo in a five-inning 10-run rule game on Friday.  The Don's face Mt. Diablo once more this year and improved in the standings as they now trail College Park by just two games.  Freshman Hannah Wilbur connected for a home run in the win and Senior Haley Ward went the distance to pick-up her fifth win in nine decisions.

Softball Game Summary 5/4/07

Acalanes is now 11-3

Acalanes defeated Mt Diablo 10-0 in 5 innings. Haley Ward pitched the entire game giving up only two hits.  She had eight strikeouts and two walks.  Haley also went 2 for 3 and scored a run.

Jennifer Silva had two doubles, scored two runs, walked and had three RBIs.  Hannah Wilbur hit a homerun, walked twice and scored three runs. Brandy Hirsch went 1-2, walked, had two runs and an RBI.

Baseball Team Can Clinch DFAL Title with Win Today at Home Against Miramonte!

Both the Don's Baseball team and the Softball team are on a roll and with a win today at home against Miramonte, the Don's Baseball team can earn another DFAL title.  Acalanes is four-games ahead of Miramonte going into the game with four games left counting today's game at 4:00pm.  The Lady Don's Softball team is striving for a DFAL title opportunity and will need a win in each of their last four games for that opportunity to unfold.  The Don's were recognized with another feature article in the CC Times today and also play the Mats at home at 4:00pm today.

Softball Feature Article from CC Times 5/8/07
The Acalanes softball team is still a long shot to catch College Park and win the Diablo Foothill Athletic League championship. But at least the Dons have prevented the Falcons from running away with things.

Since losing to the Falcons 3-2 on April 17, Acalanes has won six straight and is two games back of College Park with four to play. The two teams meet again in their final regular-season game of the year on May 17.

The Dons lost all-league catcher Sara Stenson for the season with an ankle injury in mid-March. Stenson, who will play for Southern Oregon next season, hit .453 with 19 RBI last year and was thought to be a league MVP candidate this year.

But junior Yvette Dickson moved from the outfield to behind the plate and is one of many players who have stepped up to fill the offensive void.

In wins over Campolindo (4-3), Northgate (3-2) and Alhambra (9-3), sophomore outfielder Ashley Borrelli was a combined 4-for-9, including a two-run homer against Alhambra, with five runs scored. Junior shortstop Jennifer Silva was 4-for-11 with six RBI and two runs.

In all, Acalanes is 9-3 since the injury to Stenson.

"It's not just one player who is going to generate all of the offense, so we talked about how everyone else had to pick it up," Dons coach Rory Ward said. "Obviously, we miss Sara. But even though we don't have a ton of superstars, it's a pretty solid group."

The Dons are still in good shape to earn a decent seed for the North Coast Section 2A East Bay playoffs. Last year, they lost five of their last six games before falling to Bishop O'Dowd in the first round.

Junior Yvette Dickson Has Done a Good Job Filling in for Injured Sara Stenson

Softball Team Misses Opportunity to Close in on College Park with 4-2 Loss to Miramonte!

The Don's were looking for some help in their quest for a DFAL title and got it from Alhambra who defeated first-place College Park Tuesday, but instead of being one-game back of the first-place team, the Don's fell into a second-place tie with Concord following a 4-2 loss to Miramonte.  It just wasn't the Don's day as they made five errors which resulted in three unearned runs as the Mats came-from-behind after the Don's took an early 2-0 lead.    Acalanes will now try to settle their position in the standings when they face Concord at home on Thursday, with both teams two-games back of College Park.  Game time will be 4:00pm.

Softball Game Summary 5/8/07

Cold Bats and Errors Lead to Defeat

The Acalanes girls softball team started out right when Jennifer Silva hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. The Dons didn't allow any hits until the fourth inning when a double by Miramonte started a comeback.  Miramonte ended up scoring four runs with only one of them being earned.  The others were a result of errors.

The Dons ended up with only three hits - the homerun by Silva and singles by Katie Gray and Hannah Fraschieri.  The Dons also had five errors. The pitchers, Haley Ward and Hannah Wilbur, did well giving up only four hits, four walks and had nine total strikeouts.

Softball Loses Second Game This Week by 4-2 Score, Fall in DFAL Standings!

Playing at home has been a major advantage for the Don's, but not this week.  For the second game in a row, the Don's lost a home game by a 4-2 score and have dropped from second-place to fourth in the DFAL standings as a result.  In Thursday's game, the Don's played Concord, a team they came in tied with for second-place and could not generate enough offense to overcome some fielding challenges that gave Concord their decisive runs.  Concord scored two runs on balls that got away during plays on the bases, and two more on pitches that the Don's Catcher could not contain.  Acalanes rallied for two runs, but a bases-loaded drive by Katie Gray that would have tied the score was caught by a leaping right-fielder to preserve the lead for Concord.  The Don's finish with two games next week at Mt. Diablo Tuesday and then host DFAL leader College Park on Thursday on "Senior Day'.

Softball Game Summary 5/10/07

Acalanes falls out of 2nd place by losing to Concord 4-2

Acalanes allowed Concord to score two unearned runs in the 3rd inning. The Dons then came back in the bottom of the 3rd to score one run.  Katie Gray started off the inning with a walk. Katy Trent went in to run for Gray.  Sheyenne Greer bunted to move Trent to second. Trent advanced to 3rd on a pass ball and Hannah Fraschieri stroke a base hit to plate Trent.

There was no more scoring action until the 6th inning when Concord scored two more runs on only one hit.  Acalanes answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the 6th.  Ashly Borrelli started out the inning with a hit. Yvette Dickson got a hit along and Erika Mittelman collected an RBI single.

Overall, the Dons had 6 hits and 1 error while Concord had 11 hits and no errors.  Katie Gray pitched most of the game with Hannah Wilbur relieving for part of the game.  It was Gray's first loss of the season.

Sara Stenson Returns in Don's Win over Mt. Diablo, DFAL Finale On Thursday!

It was a good news day for the Don's Softball team.  Senior Sara Stenson made a brief appearance and walked in her only at-bat of the day but marked a return to action after suffering what was originally thought to be a season-ending injury early in the year.  Stenson's return is timely as she will be available for the Don's in their final DFAL game on "Senior Day" Thursday when they host College Park at 4:00pm and for the upcoming NCS playoffs.  The Don's took care of business against winless Mt. Diablo with a 7-0 win and remain tied for fourth the DFAL standings.  See the game summary and results below.

Softball Team Drops Game to DFAL Champions College Park in League Finale!

The Acalanes Softball team lost to College Park (15-3, DFAL) by a 9-2 final score in their last league game on Thursday afternoon.  Acalanes finished their league schedule with a 12-6 record and a fifth-place finish.  Their record against equal 2A teams should earn them an at-large berth to the upcoming NCS playoffs announced on Sunday.  Jennifer Silva went 2 for 4, with an RBI and Hannah Fraschieri went 1 for 3, with an RBI as the Don's broke up the shutout with two runs in the 7th inning.

Softball Game Summary 5/15/07

College Park 9, Acalanes 2:

It took a couple more days than they had hoped, but the visiting Falcons topped the Dons to wrap up the Diablo Foothill Athletic League title in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Outfielder Danielle Ballard went 3-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run single in the second inning. College Park scored three in the second, two in the fifth and four in the seventh to win its first outright DFAL crown since 2002.

The Falcons (20-4, 15-3 DFAL) had a chance to clinch the league title on Tuesday but lost to Concord 3-1. They ended up finishing a game ahead of the Minutemen, who beat Campolindo 7-1 to finish alone in second place.  College Park pitcher Stephani Fairclough allowed one hit and seven walks through the first six innings. She stranded seven runners, including three in the bottom of the sixth as she got Acalanes designated player Sara Stenson to line out.

With the automatic berth to next week's NCS 3A East Bay playoffs, the Falcons are looking to gain one of the top eight seeds and host a first-round game. Bolstering their argument are wins over Irvington and Pinole Valley, both of which came during their run to the Standley Cup championship.

Acalanes (15-9, 12-6) finished fifth in the DFAL and will likely gain an at-large berth to the NCS 2A East Bay playoffs.

Las Lomas Upsets Acalanes in NCS Softball Playoff Game, Season Comes to End for Seniors!

After defeating Las Lomas twice during the regular season, the Don's were caught by surprise by the Walnut Creek school in their first-round NCS playoffs game Tuesday.  The Knights used timely hitting and a strong pitching performance to upset Acalanes by a 6-2 final score.  For the Don's, it was somewhat of a bitter end to a season that showed so much potential.  After flirting with a DFAL title through most of the season, the team lost their last four home games including the game Tuesday.  With those loses, their seeding fell and the road to a NCS title become much tougher.  The loss Tuesday also meant that the season ended for the departing Seniors Sara Stenson, Haley Ward, Hannah Fraschieri and Ericka Mittelman.  Stenson collected a hit in her final at-bat as a Don to cap a stellar four-year career.   Fellow four-year Varsity player Fraschieri went three-for-four at the plate in her last game.  Congratulation to the Don's for reaching the playoffs and good luck to the departing seniors.  The still young team can only grow from this year's experience and the future looks bright for next year.

Softball NCS Playoff Game Summary 5/22/07

Las Lomas 6, Acalanes 2:

Erin Hong went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored as the No. 10 Knights (13-11) upset the No. 7 and host Dons (15-10) in the first round of the NCS 2A East Bay playoffs.

The playoff win was the Knights first since a 3-0 win over Arroyo on May 28, 1998.

Las Lomas plays at No. 2 Piedmont (19-4) at 5 p.m. today.  Lauren Desino also had two hits for the Knights, including a double and two RBI as Las Lomas won for the third time in its last eight games.  The victory was also the first for the Knights over their Diablo Foothill Athletic League foes this season. Acalanes entered the game with a 11-4 win and a eight inning 4-3 victory over the Knights on May 1.

Hannah Fraschieri went 3-for-4 with a double and run scored to lead the Dons, and teammate Yvette Dickson was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Acalanes Softball Suffers Tough Loss to Las Lomas in First Round NCS Playoffs

Acalanes scored a run in the first inning leaving two runners on base.  Las Lomas answered back in the 3rd inning with a run to tie the score.  Las Lomas went on to score three runs in the 5th and another two in the 6th.   Acalanes came back with one run in the bottom of the 7th.  The girls played hard and ended up with eight hits.  Las Lomas had 10 hits.

Hannah Fraschieri ended her senior year by going 3 for 4, including a double and run scored. Sara Stenson ended her senior year with 1 for 3 day at the plate. Yvette Dickson, Ashly Borrelli, Katie Gray, and Jennifer Silva each had a hit.

The Dons had a successful year with a total record of 15-10. The team should be back stronger than ever next year with only a handful of players graduating.

Katie Gray, Yvette Dickson and Jennifer Silva Earn Softball All-DFAL Honors!

Being honored with All-DFAL selections were three Acalanes Softball players.  Katie Gray, Yvette Dickson, and Jennifer Silva, all Juniors were selected to the All-DFAL second team by the DFAL Coaches.  You might say that each of these three players deserved higher selections in this crowded field of All-leaguers, practically Silva who was a league MVP candidate and had a monster season.   Sometimes coaching politics can cloud DFAL coaches judgment, but regardless, this is a well deserving honor for our three Lady Dons.
