Rebuilding Year for Acalanes Baseball As DFAL Season Begin Tuesday!

After an incredible year in 2007, the Acalanes Baseball team is in a rebuilding year behind first year Coach Shane Dowling,  Although the Don's are not figured to be in the DFAL title hunt, this should be an interesting year in the DFAL as many teams will compete for the crown.  The Don's will open their DFAL schedule on Tuesday by hosting College Park at 4:00pm.  See the DFAL Baseball season preview below from the Contra Costa Times.

2008 DFAL Baseball Preview
Departed Dons leave plenty of room at the top in DFAL; Pitching depth figures to be a key as several teams contend for title

By Chace Bryson, CC Times

Few teams were as experienced and as dominant as the 2007 Acalanes High School baseball team.

The Dons won their first 13 games and eventually finished 25-1, pulverizing the rest of the Diablo Foothill Athletic League teams on their way to a North Coast Section 2A East Bay championship. But, to the relief of the rest of the DFAL, that team has essentially graduated. So when the league opens its 2008 season Tuesday, several teams will be going in with high hopes.

"I think our league has a great deal of parity this year," Las Lomas coach Sean Hennessy said. "It's probably going to come down to experience and pitching depth."

Many coaches believe that's the case, which is why several pointed to Miramonte, Alhambra and College Park as potential favorites.  But they aren't the only teams who can surprise some people. Hennessy himself may have the best pitcher in David Peterson, Dublin returns a good deal of talent after a rebuilding year, and even Concord could sneak up on people.

Here's a glance at each team:

Acalanes

COACH: Shane Dowling, first season

2007 RECORD: 25-1, 17-1 DFAL

TOP RETURNING PLAYERS: SS Spencer Cuiper, Sr.; 2B Will Cote, Sr.; OF Sean Nixon, Sr.

TOP NEWCOMERS: 1B John Treat, So.; 3B Trevor LaHonta, So.; RHP Adam Hoffman, So.; LHP Thomas Mahar, Sr.

KEY LOSSES: UTL/P Jake Floethe, 3B Joe Wallace, OF T.C. Lee, P Mike Guglielmo, P Scott Emery, UTL James Matthew, C Mike Stone, OF Dustin Montero, P Donny Miller

OUTLOOK: The Dons will undergo a thorough overhaul this season, all the way up to the coaching staff, as Andy Tarpley moved on to Diablo Valley College and Dowling is taking his place. Dowling inherits a group consisting almost entirely of newcomers, and the few returning players rarely saw much time during 2007. Still, there are bright spots to speak of, including the left-hander Mahar. Treat and holdovers Cuiper and Nixon will lead the Dons offense.

Predicted finish:
1. Miramonte
2. Alhambra
3. College Park
4. Dublin
5. Concord
6. Las Lomas
7. Campolindo
8. Northgate
9. Acalanes

Acalanes Baseball Team Wins NCS Championship with 16-3 Win Over Albany High!

In a lopsided game against Albany High, the Acalanes Don's Baseball team completed their magical spring with a 16-3 victory in the NCS 2A Championship Game played Saturday afternoon at James Logan High.  The win completes the Don's season that saw them capture a DFAL title and finish with a 25-1 record.  The NCS Title was icing on the cake.  This well deserving team scored early and often against a #8-seed Albany squad that was hoping to upset Acalanes as they had earlier against the #2-seed St. Mary's to reach the Championship game.  The big blow was a grand slam homer off the bat of Senior catcher Mike Stone that gave the Don's a defining 8-0 lead in the second inning.  Acalanes kept up the pace against a plethora of Albany pitchers, but in a show of respect, the Don's didn't try to run up the score, but it was all Acalanes on this day and 16 runs scored before Albany scored three meaningless runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, just before the Don's celebrated in a dog pile on the pitchers mound following the final out.  Congratulation to Head Coach Andy Tarpley, his staff and the entire Don's Baseball Program for finishing off the 2006-07 season with a NCS Championship.  Click here for the first set of pictures and here for second set of pictures from the game.

Best of the Spring- 2007 / Contra Costa All-Times Teams

Acalanes Baseball Team is Selected as the #1 Division III School in the State and #14 Overall!

Cal-Hi Sports released its final state baseball rankings for 2007 this morning and the East Bay is well represented in the Top 50. Heading the list is Acalanes as the Dons check in at No. 14 after cruising to the NCS 2A East Bay title.  Next are the two schools who met in the NCS 3A East Bay championship, with De La Salle at No. 19, followed by Alameda at No. 29. Rounding out the list is Clayton Valley at No. 36. Also of note are the division rankings because Acalanes finished the year as the No. 1 ranked team in Division III.

Acalanes Baseball Loses Head Coach Andy Tarpley to DVC!

After leading the Don's to consecutive DFAL titles and an NCS Championship in 2007, Acalanes Baseball Coach announced that he was leaving to join the Baseball staff at Diablo Valley College.  Tarpley said that this was the natural progression in his desire to coach at the College level.  Tarpley will be joined by several Acalanes grads that are making DVC part of their college plans.  Thanks to Andy for all the fine work he has done at Acalanes and good luck in the future.  Read the below article from Chace Bryson of the Contra Costa Times.

Acalanes Varsity Baseball Coach Andy Tarpley Heading to DVC!
After coaching the Acalanes High School baseball team to 62 wins in just three seasons, Andy Tarpley has announced he'll be leaving the Dons to join the coaching staff at Diablo Valley College.

Tarpley will take on the role of hitting and outfield coach with the Vikings.

"Pretty much when I got into coaching, this is what I wanted to do," Tarpley said. "I've always wanted to get into the college level, and it felt like it's what I needed to dive into at this time."

It's no surprise that DVC coach Bob Ralston sought out Tarpley to be his hitting coach, especially after the offensive prowess his 2007 Acalanes team displayed on its way to finishing 25-1 and winning the North Coast Section 2A East Bay championship. In the title game, six of the Dons' nine starters had batting averages of .350 or higher.

"He's going to bring a lot of energy," said Ralston, whose relationship with Tarpley dates back to the early 1990s. "He's real passionate about baseball, particularly about the hitting part of the game. He's going to be a big plus for our program, and he's going to play a big part in it."

Tarpley might have picked just the right time to play a part in the DVC program. The Vikings are coming off a promising first season under Ralston, who previously coached at Clayton Valley High for eight years. DVC went 25-17 and reached the Sacramento Super Regional after a first-round playoff upset of San Mateo. The Vikings parlayed that success into a strong recruiting season.

Among the high-profile players who have committed to play for the Vikings next year are Alameda's Kenny Arnerich, Berean Christian's Mitch Petrak and as many as four players from Tarpley's championship team at Acalanes, including All-Times first-team shortstop Ben Englehart and first-team catcher Mike Stone.

Even though he felt the time was right, Tarpley said leaving the Dons wasn't easy.

"It was very tough," Tarpley said. "I told the principal and athletic director that I would not have received this opportunity without them. I was very fortunate that they took a chance on hiring a head coach without head coaching experience."

Tarpley left Acalanes with an overall record of 62-15 and a 43-11 mark in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League. He expects to take an active role in the hiring of his replacement.

"It's like I built a very nice house," Tarpley said. "And now I'm selling that house, and I'm very proud of it."
